My Father's Day Tribute in this Sunday's San Francisco Chronicle

I’ve been thinking about this story for many years, because it is a story that thread throughout my childhood and young adult years. I could never quite find the words to make it work or give it justice, but a few weeks ago, I decided to sit down and start writing. And then, of course, I became so engrossed that I was unable to stop writing.

So, this is a tribute to my father, and a tribute to all fathers who teach some of life’s greatest lessons around love, loyalty and character. I was originally nervous when it went online, and it took me a few hours to send my dad the link. “Hope you enjoy it.” I said. And he did – he said it brought back very good memories, and very painful ones, too. But in the end, I shared a small slice of time that hopefully will resonate with many who have experienced the challenges of being in a new place, or altering what you call home.

“On this Father’s Day, I think about the many ways my father has taught me about character, love and loyalty, and reflect on those visits. We sometimes worry about how we will effectively teach our children to be kind and generous human beings. We look to experts, read books and follow others’ advice.
